LeeMade custom outerwear guide
Design Your Own Leather Jacket
A useful custom jacket brief connects the visual idea to material, fit and construction decisions. This guide shows what to prepare before requesting a handmade, made-to-measure leather jacket.
Start with purpose, not decoration
Decide where the jacket will be worn, the climate, the expected layers and whether softness, structure or durability matters most. A daily lambskin jacket, a structured cowhide biker and a lightweight suede overshirt need different material and pattern decisions even when their reference images look similar.
Name the broad silhouette first: bomber, biker, cafe racer, trucker, flight, blazer-inspired, overshirt or an original shape. Then describe what should change rather than asking for a direct copy of a branded product.
Build a clear design brief
Record preferred length, collar, closure, pocket position, cuff, hem, lining, hardware color and visible seam direction. Mark details on a simple front and back sketch if possible. Inspiration images can communicate separate ideas for shape, material and detail; they do not need to come from one finished garment.
Choose material and fit together
Leather weight and drape affect the final silhouette. Softer leather can follow the body while heavier hides hold a more architectural shape. State whether the jacket should fit close, regular or relaxed and what will be worn underneath. Measurements without this fit context are incomplete.
Approve a measurable specification
Before paying a production deposit, confirm the selected material, color, silhouette, construction details, measurements, quote and estimated timing in writing. This turns a visual idea into a commission that can be reviewed during production and at final delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Can I design a leather jacket online?
Yes. A remote commission can begin with a sketch, description or inspiration images and continue through written specifications and guided measurements.
Do I need professional fashion drawings?
No. Clear notes, simple sketches and well-labelled inspiration images are enough to begin a consultation.
Can a custom maker copy a branded jacket exactly?
LeeMade uses references only to communicate general design direction and does not offer commissioned garments as official branded products.
What should I send with my first inquiry?
Send the intended jacket type, use, fit direction, material preference, deadline and any sketches or labelled inspiration images you already have.
